Credit Report Error Checklist: Review, Document, Dispute, and Follow Up
Published and reviewed: July 25, 2026
A credit-report review is easier when you separate identity information, account history, balances, payment status, collections, and public-record information into individual checks.
Get reports from the official source
Use the federally authorized credit-report website to request reports from the nationwide credit bureaus. Save or print each report and note the date. The three reports may not contain identical information because creditors do not always report to every bureau.
Mark each item that needs investigation
Check names, addresses, employers, open accounts, closed accounts, balances, credit limits, payment history, collections, and inquiries. An unfamiliar item is not automatically fraud; it may be an old creditor name, a transferred account, or an authorized-user account. Confirm the account before disputing it.
Build an evidence file
For each suspected error, create a short statement explaining what is wrong and what correction you are requesting. Attach relevant statements, payment confirmations, identity documents, or correspondence. Keep originals and send copies when submitting by mail.
Dispute with the bureau and the furnisher
You may dispute inaccurate information with the credit bureau and with the company that supplied the information. Use trackable submission methods and save confirmation numbers. Review the investigation result and obtain an updated report when available.
Escalate identity-theft concerns quickly
If an account appears to result from identity theft, consider a fraud alert or security freeze and use the federal identity-theft recovery process. Change affected passwords and contact the creditor's fraud department.
